Plan Eligibility

Additional considerations

In addition to the proposed Plan options outlined above, the SC Board will be voting on the following Plan eligibility proposals in November:

Non-full-time members

Current

  • Plan membership is optional for non-full-time members who work 700 hours or earn 35% of YMPE (two consecutive calendar years), unless the employer elects mandatory membership

Proposed

  • Mandatory for all non-full-time members, regardless of income or service levels
  • Members permitted to “opt out” of the Plan if they earn less than 35% of the YMPE annually (currently about $20,000)

Rationale

Recognizing emerging workforce trends, this proposal will allow for broader defined benefit coverage.

Normal retirement age of 60 for paramedics

Current

  • Normal retirement age of 65
  • Optional NRA 60 for police and fire (subject to negotiation)

Proposed

  • Normal retirement age of 60
  • Optional for police, fire and paramedics (subject to negotiation)

Rationale

Allowing the normal retirement age of paramedics to be in line with Police and Fire ensures equitable treatment of the affected members.
