Become an OMERS Member

If you work for an OMERS employer, you may be eligible to join the OMERS Plan and receive our member benefits, including:

  • income for life;

  • employer-matched contributions;

  • early retirement options;

  • survivor benefits;

  • disability protection; and

  • a lower taxable income.


You can explore the benefits of joining the plan now by reading examples illustrating pension payments compared to contributions for three part-time members.

If you’ve worked for another OMERS employer, you may be eligible to join the plan now. Find out if your previous employer was an OMERS employer.


Am I Eligible?

If your employer has given you information on joining the OMERS Plan, complete the Offer of OMERS membership form in the booklet your employer provided. Once you give the form to your employer, they’ll send it to us. If your employer hasn’t given you information about OMERS, contact your Human Resources Representative to find when you can join the OMERS Pension Plan.

You are eligible for OMERS membership in 2021 if you met one of the following two conditions during each of 2019 and 2020:

  • You worked at least 700 hours (including overtime) with any participating OMERS employer.

or

  • You earned, including overtime and vacation pay, at least 35% of the CPP earnings limit with any participating OMERS employer:

    • You earned at least $20,090 in 2019

    • You earned at least $20,545 in 2020

Examples of employees eligible for OMERS membership in 2021

  • In 2019, Sue started working for an OMERS employer. She earned over $20,090 in 2019 and worked over 700 hours in 2020.

  • In 2019, George earned over $20,090 working for an OMERS employer. He then moved to another OMERS employer and worked over 700 hours in 2020.

  • Manil has worked part-time for two OMERS employers for several years. His combined earnings from both employers were over $20,090 in 2019 and over $20,545 in 2020.

You may be eligible for OMERS membership! Tell your current OMERS employer about previous employment or a part-time job with another OMERS employer – it may help you qualify sooner.

You are eligible for OMERS membership in 2020 if you met one of the following two conditions during each of 2018 and 2019:

  • You worked at least 700 hours (including overtime) with any participating OMERS employer.

or

  • You earned, including overtime and vacation pay, at least 35% of the CPP earnings limit with any participating OMERS employer:

    • You earned at least $19,565 in 2018

    • You earned at least $20,090 in 2019

Examples of employees eligible for OMERS membership in 2020

  • In 2018, Sue started working for an OMERS employer. She earned over $19,565 in 2018 and worked over 700 hours in 2019.

  • In 2018, George earned over $19,565 working for an OMERS employer. He then moved to another OMERS employer and worked over 700 hours in 2019.

  • Manil has worked part-time for two OMERS employers for several years. His combined earnings from both employers were over $19,565 in 2018 and over $20,090 in 2019.
